Feijoa Unique
Description
Genus of two species of shrubs from Brazil named for Don de Silva Feijoa, 19th century Brazilian botanist. The popular fruiting Feijoa selloviana is also a valuable landscaping plant. Used extensively for screens or hedges, can be worked into shrub boarders or used as speciman shrub. Hardy to almost zero temperatures, tolorant of drought and coastal exposure once established. Plant in any free draining soil. Mulch freely, apply nitrogen rich fertiliser spring and autumn and water through dry periods for fruit production. Seedling-grown trees unpredictable as to fruit quality. Selected vegetatively propagated clones are preferable. Crops dependent on good cross pollination, always better in group planting.

Trees are of an upright yet spreading habit, forming a dense shrub useful for screening. Bright red flowers form in summer, being self-fertile they produce an abundance of large fruit with smooth, soft and juicy flesh in early autumn. Hardy.
